Magic's collector appeal has suffered for many years due to market saturation. While borderless and alternative art cards featuring anime/retro designs are still cool cards to collect, they are simply not that valuable. For example, a typical "foil, borderless, anime version of a legendary creature" sells for just 39 cents! As a result, the bulk of the Magic collector's focus now is on Universes Beyond sets like LOTR or Final Fantasy, where serialized cards can fetch thousands of dollars. There is just not much of a middle ground for casual collectors.

Player's Insight:

As the pioneer in TCG, Magic is the de-facto game that all other games are judged against. The mechanics are complex with a lot of strategic depth, yet the game plays so cleanly and is so well-paced that all the complexity just melts away. There are no damage counters to mess with, and you don't even need a life counter if you can count to 20. While casual Magic is more about the "Commander" format these days, which is a disappointment to many of the older generation players, it is still the best TCG for drafts and pre-releases. If the "Commander" format is not your cup of tea, alternative formats like Canadian highlanders or Australian highlanders still retain some of the original "Magic" feel from the early days.
